Most agencies can make a site look good. What a surgeon needs is a designer who understands a patient deciding on surgery, and who knows the rules your published claims must follow. This guide is about choosing, so it does not repeat what we build. For that, see ophthalmology website design.

How to choose an ophthalmology website designer

Seven criteria worth checking, whoever you speak to.

Live eye-care sites you can visit

Ask for URLs, not screenshots. Visit them on a phone. Check that the work is recent.

Who writes the procedure content

Patients read your procedure pages. If the agency expects you to write them, or uses generic text, that is a cost the quote may not show. Copywriting is included in every Aethus build.

How advertising rules are handled

Ask how the designer approaches the ASA's CAP Code and GMC guidance on claims, prices, outcome imagery and testimonials. The registered clinician is ultimately responsible, so a good designer builds in your review step.

Accessibility

Your visitors include people with cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Ask whether the site is tested to WCAG 2.2 AA, and how.

Custom code or a template

Ask what the site is built on, who can edit it, and who owns the code. Aethus sites are custom-coded, with no WordPress and no templates.

A fixed, written price

Ask for a fixed price in writing, what is excluded, and what hosting costs afterwards. Ours is from £8,000 + VAT for an ophthalmology site, with hosting at £40 + VAT a month.

Who you will deal with

Aethus is led by its founder, Lawrence O'Shea. Ask any agency who will actually build your site.

Questions to put to any designer

Which eye-care sites have you built? Who writes the procedure pages? What happens to my existing Google rankings if I move? How do you handle published prices and outcome claims? Which tools do patients get before they book? What do I own when the site is finished, and what will I pay monthly?

Three live eye-care practices built by Aethus

These are the practices to check us against. Each case study shows the site and what we did.

Menassa Vision, Liverpool, Southport and the North West

Compare cost before you compare agencies

Our ophthalmology builds start from £8,000 + VAT at a fixed price. Our website cost guide explains what moves the figure, so you can compare quotes on the same footing.

Frequently asked questions

Who designs websites for ophthalmologists in the UK?

Aethus is a UK agency that designs, writes and builds websites for private ophthalmologists and eye surgeons. Its three live eye-care practices are Mr Jesse Panthagani in the East Midlands, K Vision Centre across London and Surrey, and Menassa Vision in the North West.

How do I choose a website designer for my eye practice?

Ask for live eye-care sites you can visit, who writes the procedure content, how CAP Code and GMC advertising rules are handled, whether the site is tested to WCAG 2.2 AA, what it is built on, and for a fixed written price including hosting.

Does my designer need ophthalmology experience?

It helps a great deal. A designer who has built for surgeons already knows the patient questions, the procedure structure and the advertising rules, so you are not paying for them to learn.

What does an ophthalmology website designer cost?

At Aethus, from £8,000 + VAT at a fixed price, with hosting at £40 + VAT a month. Our ophthalmology website cost page explains what changes the figure.

Do you only work with ophthalmologists?

We also offer website design and SEO for dental, aesthetic and physiotherapy practices, but all of our published medical work is in eye care.
